First, check the transmission fluid - is the level right? Does it look and/or smell burnt? Change the fluid and look at the filter. The filter has a magnet - if it has some black fuzz of fine metal particles, that's normal. If it has metal chunks, not a good sign.

Poor shifting can be due to a broken valve body spring, and premature shifting is a sign of leaky governor seals. The valve body sits on top of the transmission, and can be easily removed with the tranny in the car. The governor seals can also be replaced with the tranny in the car, by going in through the left wheel well.

However, the autobox on a 9000 isn't the strongest out there, and it could be a bad situation, with weak clutches. Just something to keep in mind.

You need to find a good transmission shop that works with ZF transmissions of this vintage. (also used on BMW and Jags.) The ZF is a tricky beast, and some shops won't work on it. You don't want to go to a shop where someone will learn on it, because the results won't be pretty.

I recommend you call or otherwise contact Eriksson Industries (http://erikssonindustries.com) - they sell the transmission parts and whole transmissions. They can give some advice, and they can also tell you if they deal with any shops in your area. If they don't deal with anyone in your area, try to find a shop that works with ZFs. See if there is an independent shop in the area that works on Saabs, BMWs, and/or Jags, and see if they do tranny work, or know who does.

If you want to stick to DIY, then check the fluid and change the fluid and filter. You can pull the valve body and check the springs - the usual failure mode is to have one break. And replacing the governor seals is a couple/three hour job.
