Low pressure Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Sat, 2 May 2009 05:26:24 In Reply to: Re: Not on all the time, Jeff, Fri, 1 May 2009 20:52:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I agree, low pressure is the most common reason. O-rings or not, no system is leak-proof. This is a '92. If the AC system was never serviced, it's pretty reasonable to assume that in the past 18 years (since it was built) the pressure leaked down. It doesn't have to go all at once - the pressure can leak down slowly. At one point it is high enough to allow the switch to close and the clutch come on. A little later, it has leaked down just enough that there is pressure, but not enough to close the switch - no AC.
The bad news is that '92 was the last year of the R12 systems. R12 has been phased out (something about eating a hole in the ozone layer and condemning all life on Earth to extinction). It is still available, but frightfully expensive. One solution is to retrofit with R134, which requires the replacement of several parts.
If it turns out to be a bad fan switch or pressure switch, or a similar electrical issue (bad relay), that's DIY. If it has to do with touching the refrigerant in any way, get thee to a shop that deals with AC. Yes, there are folks that do DIY AC, but to do it remotely right, you need a lot of special tools (gauges) and experience. Getting it wrong can be dangerous, but more likely you'll be wasting expensive refrigerant. When it comes to the refrigerant side, if you have to ask about the system, you don't have the experience to DIY. No flame, just an observation.
Good luck!
