I agree with Bill.
Yes, it does sound like a dropped valve and overheating. The best case scenario is you need an engine rebuild.
The worst case scenario is you need an engine rebuild, the tranny is toast, the heater core is leaking, and the owner doesn't have the radio code.
If the car is in very nice shape physically, you are very handy, and have access to a parts car, you could consider a project car. A project car is something you work on in the garage for a couple of years and then sell, in pieces, to someone else. But its fun to play with.
The engine doesn't run, so you have no idea if the transmission works, the brakes work, the suspension is in decent shape, or the AC blows cold. the safest assumption is the only thing that does work is the fuel pump (wet plug), starter motor, and if you saw it come on when you opened the door, the dome light.
I wouldn't run away - you could pull a muscle. Back away slowly.
