And is the pump not running? Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Sun, 31 May 2009 14:50:40 In Reply to: ABS and brake warning light when warm out, c130mike, Sun, 31 May 2009 08:57:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'd say the pump isn't running. If you get the car to a safe spot, pull over and open the hood. Hit the brake pedal repeatedly and listen for the pump running.
I suspect Dick is right. If the accumulator is weak, the ABS pump runs all the time, or nearly so. This causes it to get hot. On warm days, it overheats, and the thermal protection kicks in, shutting it down.
Address this quick, because replacing an ABS pump is VERY expensive as compared to an accumulator. Of course, we're assuming this is has the shared ABS/Boost pump, which varies by year. WHAT YEAR?
With a cold car (e.g. first thing in the morning), do the Accumulator test. Note where the Brake Fluid is in the reservoir. It should be well ABOVE the FULL line. Start the car. Wait for the ABS and Brake Fluid lights to go out. You should hear the ABS pump go off a few seconds later. Check the Brake Fluid level again - it should be lower than before you started the car, near the FULL line.
Now, stomp the brake pedal, hard and fast (kill the spider! kill the spider!) These should be hard presses, like a hard stop. Count how many times it takes before the ABS and Brake Fluid lights come on.
If it takes more than 12 hard presses, the Accumulator is OK. 8 to 12, on its way out. 5 or less, bad.
The other sign of a bad accumulator would be that the level doesn't drop, or barely drops, from the cold, engine off level to when the ABS and Brake Fluid lights have gone out.
If it isn't the accumulator, it might be just the thermal cut-out on the ABS pump, or bad contacts on the ABS relay.
