And now for something completely weird.

So a couple-three weeks ago I pull into the off-airport lot where I park on trips. Pull out the bags, close the hatch but it won't latch. It's semi-dark out and I had to go, so I lock the rest of the car and off I go.
I came back, had two days at home before leaving for France, so no time to look, but I did eyeball compare to my daughter's car. I seemed to be missing a spring that was mostly inside the latch mechanism. OK, something to think about. Off I go again.
Now, two weeks later I finally get to the boneyard and pull the latch mechanism (latch, actuator, etc.) off a car and bring it home. Now comes the weird part.
I pull the bad one off my car and take a close look. The spring that puts tension on the latch is gone completely. But inside the latch, stopping it from moving, is a 10mm nut. I figure it is from someplace else inside the hatch, but I couldn't find any place with a missing nut. It may show up some other time, but how it got in there, and got past the spring, I can't figure out. Or how the spring failed and disappeared is also unknown. The spring is probably somewhere under the plastic shroud around the latch, but the nut is a mystery. I don't think it's part of the latch assembly, but will look further.
Easy to fix with a good part (all of $25). And now the hatch locks and the light in the pictogram is out!
