Shift linkage adjustment

My 93 9000 manual fails to go into reverse although the shift lever is in the reverse position. I've inspected the rubber coupling and all appears well and I've attempted to to go through the alignment process which involves putting the car in reverse for the 93 but the shift shaft is way over to the left and the holes do not even come close to lining up. Is it possible that the metal piece that bolts to the left side of the rubber coupling is failing? It appears to have a small crack on the bottom side.
