Starting many years ago I noticed something that it seems many people
conveniently forget: Automobiles usually have 4 wheels/tires, are
within certain sizes from what we consider tiny to quite huge - and
no matter what anyone does to 'em they ALL reach a top speed of about
200 MPH on a good day, when all is juuuust right (much higher than
that and they've become missiles and use jet engines...not ICEs...).

Only two major/important differences I can see:
1 - Some are notably QUICKER to accelerate.
B - Some are fitted out better for ergonomics and/or comfort.

Aside of that - they are all just automobiles.

What I see is missing above is a 3rd category:
3 - Some have astounding fuel efficiency.
By the above I do NOT mean hybrids with huge batteries or things
made of paper mache with one cylinder engines !!!
(And if we were a reasonable species there'd be a 4th about those
which no longer need to subscribe to friction...but never mind...)

This all leads to my real point, which is regarding the glory
hounds and the naysayers;

The former takes very nice, functional, sometimes very pretty cars,
and turns them into problematic abortions which eat driveline parts
for snacks and consume huge sums of money making 'go-fast mobiles'
which are highly illegal to drive at their new top speeds and also
usually go to scrap soon thereafter for obvious reasons.
(All very sad in my opinion when all they've done is make more junk.)

The latter takes pride in being hidebound and has bought absolutely
100% into the mainstream assertions regarding fuel efficiency as
well as anything that maintains the status quo.
(Also very sad because to these folks air/fuel ratios are NOT in any
way malleable - written in stone, so to speak.)

Where I am leading with all this rambling is that there are other,
but much less visible sorts of people, for example the discoverer -
who challenges the 'rules' of fuel usage and may come up with simple
ways to get 100 MPG without exotic new systems...or the admirer of
automotive art who most values pristine, rare cars preserved in
their exact way just as they were built to start with.

Personally I claim none of these extreme distinctions, but:
I am delighted to have a work of art to drive which is highly
ergonomic - quick and fast enough that I must be careful not to run
afoul of the law, convenient in terms of it's capacities and well
enough built that if I only maintain it I will get excellent service
from it for a very long time.

If there were a wish I could wish it would be for access to a place
where I could discover a reasonable means to improve it's fuel use
without sacrificing much in the way of performance; but other than
that I feel having a car which will accelerate UP steep hills and
STILL get 25 MPG is just amazing and great.

Very little thrills me more than going up the steepest hill on our
local interstate once in a while - beginning at the bottom doing
around 70, and arriving at the top doing over 100 whilst seeing no
overheating or anything amiss.

I only hope Saab will be restored to a whole and healthy company
after being bought by a Swedish concern after being so sadly GM'd
nearly to oblivion.

Thanks for reading my crazy ramble - I hope it doesn't make me into
flame bait !
