If I'm not mistaken, fluid flows from the block, through the upper hose, and into the radiator. ergo, potential radiator blockage. I'd recommend pulling the radiator and using a solvent of some sort (not sure what, though; perhaps distilled white vinegar?), thereby minimizing risk of junk entering the system.
The hoses are all easy to replace - just o-clamps. Replace the thermostat as a matter of course, but make sure you buy OEM; generic thermostats from the auto parts store don't have 'breather holes' to allow air bubbles to pass. My 9k nearly overheated after using one and I promptly switched to the OE part. No problems.
