Step 1 - go to a shop that does AC and have them evacuate the system.
Step 2 - Pull off the parts yourself; with an evacuated system, it's no big deal.
Step 3 - Go back to the AC shop - have them pressure test the system, because they have the right tools. They'll also evacuate the system (because they have the right tools), and refill the system with the right amount of refrigerant and lubricant (because they have the right tools.) While you're at it, have them add tracer, as it makes troubleshooting easier.
If all is well, it'll work fine. If not, you'll go back to the AC shop again because it turns out you needed a new expansion valve.
Don't take this as a flame, but if you have to ask, then you probably don't have the expertise or the tools (tools, especially) for steps 1 and 3. The evacuation and filling in Step 3 is critical, because if you don't clear the moisture out of the system, or get the pressure and lubricant just right, you can easily destroy the nice new parts you just put in.
Despite the fact that one is a critical safety system and the other is comfort, doing the brakes isn't the same as the AC. I can talk someone through brakes as a first timer; the tools are relatively simple and the knowledge factor is low. AC, not so simple, and to do it right, you really need to tool up.
