So #1 daughter is out in the sticks in Maine doing enviro research. Calls in a mild panic Friday afternoon. Her car ('95 9K CS) won't start. Turned over fine-- until she wore the battery flat.

I ask if she can hear the fuel pump when she turns on the ignition. Not sure. "But when it did try to start it coughed and chugged." Just great! I'm thinking maybe fuel pump, DI, FPR. etc. Engine was cold so I figured CPS is not a real suspect.

Groan. Whatever it is, she's 3.5 hours away. I'm pulling out Ari's no-start list and thinking I'm gonna have to go up there to bail her out, since I don't know of a good indy near where she lives. But she does have AAA.

So knowing how she operates, I ask, "Do you have gas?"

"Well, the fuel light was on and it said I had 61 miles to empty." Then she complains that the driver's door keeps closing on her as she's parked on an angle--the car is tilted pretty hard to the right. Hmmm. And a light bulb begins to glimmer over my head.

"Get 2-3 gallons of gas and try again," I tell her. "I bet the fuel is away from the pick up." Hey, I figure it's worth a shot, given the symptoms.

The AAA guys shows up from 3 miles down the road. Pulls the car onto flat ground. Adds gas to the tank and juice to the battery. Vroom! Starts right up. And she goes home.

So she has (theoretically) learned not to run around with the fuel light on (as I keep telling her), and if she does, to park on flat ground.

Sure beats a drive to western Maine with a load of tools and stuff, or having some indy I don't know play with the beast and possibly hose me for repairs.
