I suspect the ignition switch. The key (no pun intended) was the dash lights going out.
When the car doesn't start, do you get the dash lights? Turn the key to ON, but you don't get the dash lights? That's the ignition switch.
With the newer cars, the switches seem to die every few years. The switch develops a bad connection, a bad connection that gets worse when the ignition switch is hot - a typical hot start problem.
The dash lights are on the same circuit as the DI, fuel injection system, and fuel pump. If the car doesn't start, turn the key to ON - if you don't see dash lights (ABS, BATTERY, Oil pressure), then the ignition switch needs replacement.
This is a quick and easy replacement - see past posts. The switch is an electrical component that bolts onto the back of the lock cylinder. So you replace the switch and leave the lock alone - no need to play with keys. The part isn't cheap - about $65, but a lot cheaper than a DI (or even a tow.)
