Deleting the A/C compressor?

The air conditioner compressor in #1 daughter's '95 CS has long been belly up. She doesn't care because she doesn't like A/C all that much anyway. Besides, a minor altercation two summers back with another car has the A/C fan resting against the condenser so it won't work anyway. It's not worth fixing on her car, so I've let it be.
Is there a way to remove it entirely and run a shorter serp belt? I'm thinking this because I'm concerned the A/C could seize up and kill the belt. Or is this something I shouldn't worry about? She's been running without A/C for about 4 years and there hasn't been R134a in the system in ages.
The ACC works fine, she has plenty of heat in the winter and the blower works fine, the fan controller is OK, too.
Air conditioning something I know little about, so all input is welcome. Thanks, guys.
