Carbs worked on the same principle

Technical discussions are good for the soul!
A dirty air filter probably causes decreased performance due to restricted flow and increased pumping losses in the engine.
Carbs worked on the venturi principle where flow thru a restriction increased the velocity and decreased the pressure. Gasoline, in the float bowl and at atmospheric pressure, was sucked into the flow.
Carbs were designed to work over a wide range of flow velocities (throttle position and engine rpm), and because of that there were inherent inefficiencies. That is why they designed multistage carbs. The ultimate multistage carb was the variable venturi carb, which had a problem in that things got dirty and the variable didn't always vary.
As I'm writing this I realize that the only reason I know about carbs is that I started driving in 1963 and that makes me old!
Tz, you really need to do some reading. A little basic knowledge goes a long way.
