Axle differences also apply to the inner tripod bearing, so the drive flange on the transmission would have to be changed to accept it.
I don't know whether an earlier-style transmission used the same flanges (turbo being different than non-turbo) or the same axle lengths.
Simon has a point...I hesitated to mention the idea of a bearing swap, sticking with the 87 spindle and axles, because I wasn't sure of the spline count, whether it's different for turbos than non-turbos. But I think it's no different at the bearing, only the axles themselves differ.
A look at the eEuroparts diagrams would settle that in short order.
