loosening crank pulley bolt Q?

Got my motor mounts in, now I need to remove the crank pulley bolt. I have a Haynes book that says to put the car in fourth gear, apply the parking brake, and loosen the bolt. I discovered that in order to do this the wheel needs to be installed and the car lowered, otherwise you just end up turning the axle through the transmission.
After installing the wheel and lowering the car down, I attempted to loosen the bolt again, and manage to accomplish absolutely nothing. The breaker bar/socket flex a ridiculous amount and then return to the same starting position when I reduce the torque, with no bolt movement.
This was accomplished from under the car, might be able to use a cheater on the end of the breaker bar from above, but don't recall if there is clearance by the head (car is parked elsewhere).
What other options do I have? My dad's compressor doesn't put out much cfm's to make an impact wrench viable.
Advice appreciated, thanks
