head bolts, what to do with Posted by TML [Email] (#2212) [Profile/Gallery] (more from TML) on Fri, 9 Oct 2009 21:32:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I'm in the process of re-building a '97 Aero engine. I started torquing the (used) head bolts as per the spec in the Haynes manual; 44 ft-lb first stage, 59 ft-lb second stage; when I got to the angle torque stage, I stopped at 60 degrees, just because it seemed like it was a massive amount of torque. Then I started searching here to double check the spec, and discovered the whole "torque to yield, don't re-use the bolts" business. So my question is, how to proceed? Since I already have them in, should I leave them as-is and wait to see if there is a leak problem, or replace them right away? I will certainly not torque them the last 30 degrees, considering the consequences of a snapped bolt.
