How far is "hardly moves form cold to running temperature"? If the needle is, for example, one or two needle-widths above the blue zone, then there is something amiss. If your needle is hanging steady on the temperature gauge once the engine is warm (not fluctuating up and down the gauge), then there may be an electrical incompatibility between the sensor and your gauge (but I think that's rather unlikely). You may have a ground problem with the gauge (check the instrument cluster grounding point under the dash top just to the right of the left-hand speaker, or a resistance problem in the wiring. Did you use any sort of insulating tape on the threads of the sensor when you installed it, such as teflon tape? Teflon tape will inhibit the ground function of the sensor (sensor threads to engine block), as it isn't a good conductor. I second your thought, by the way, of wishing there were a gradient on the temperature gauge.
