Well... in our family we've had 3 9000s and 4 9-5s. 9000s are/were my '86 (died of old age), mother's '89 (wrecked), and my current '97 aero. 9-5s are/were mom's '99 (wrecked) and replaced with an '06 (which essentially is an aero), wife's '99 that went away due to being a lemon and her current '02.

Overall, the 9000s have been a bit more reliable than the 9-5s, and the list of problems that require a TechII to fix is much smaller. Cost to repair is also generally less and from a DIY perspective I find them easier to work on (notwithstanding the TechII factor). The 9000s have also been more consistent, whereas the 9-5s range from "nightmare" to almost trouble-free. Having said that, the most reliable 9-5 (my wife's '02) has been better than any of the 9000s.

A big factor could also be the transmission... if you like an automatic the one in the 9-5 is much better (and even better from '02 on). 5-speed, it's pretty much a wash, the 9000 and 9-5 units are almost identical.

I agree with others the 9-5 rides/handles better than the 9000 and engine performance is more consistent. But it's got less room inside (especially for large cargo, none of our 9-5s was a wagon) and in our experience doesn't get as good MPG with mostly in-town driving.

The bottom line for us: I'm sticking with my 9000, my mother and wife are sticking with their 9-5s.
