If the plugs fit - maybe Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Wed, 2 Dec 2009 11:01:51 In Reply to: strategy compromise?, DickT [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 1 Dec 2009 19:09:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Saabnut contends that the rear O2 sensor is used to adjust the air/fuel mixture, I have always read that it does not, i.e. the rear is used only for checking that the cat is working - but that is not the question here. It does seem that you want to replace the rear sensor.
On 1996 cars, the front and rear sensors are different parts, but this may be only the length of the wire going to the front sensor. Question: are the plugs identical? Are they both 4-wire sensors? If so, your swapping plan could work.
The OEM rear O2 sensor is ridiculously expensive, probably because it is a very rare bird that is hardly ever replaced. If the front is not plug-compatible with the rear, I would suggest trying a generic or other sensor spliced to the wire part of the old one. On my Audi A4 V6, which has four O2 sensors ($$$$), here is the lineup of O2 sensors that I have been using trouble free for several years:
* For the fronts, I used the Bosch 3-wire sensor which fits a 1992 Ford Mustang 5.0. These have been in place without a Check Engine Light for five years.
* For the rears, I used Bosch 4-wire sensor part #13913 which is for an early 1990's Chrysler Concorde. I have had these on the car for about two years, good so far.
Both of these parts are widely available from most any auto parts store; Autozone sells them for less than $40 each. Just be very careful about splicing; see post from "VAP" on Audiworld forum which is exactly how I did it.
