This time, as I tightened the ring, the fuel pump rotated clockwise, just as everyone says. If I put it at 7 o'clock to start with, it aligned properly with the mark on the passenger side of the fuel tank. Passenger side for LHD cars, that is.
Other things I learned: Pulling out the fuel lines from the top of the fuel pump is difficult. I broke one, and installing a replacement connector took about 2 hours, as the fuel line is not at all flexible. On repeat installations, I had more success using two screwdrivers to pry on opposite sides of the connector. You'll need a short and a long screwdriver to do this, using the edge of the floor opening for leverage. Take it slowly, and have someone else withdraw the retention tab with a third screwdriver while you pry. Make sure your screwdriver tips are prying at the centerline of the connector, and not off-center, or you'll break the thing.
Also, good idea to clean the electrical connections prior to reassembly.
