Adjusting e-brake cable in car

I went to adjust my cable last night.
I put a flat head in the slot of the cable and used an open ended wrench to turn the nut.
The tab broke off of the flat head slot.
The nut is just about a 1/4 inch below the threaded part of the cable.
My question is:
How deep can the nut go down?
I would think that it must go down further because my e-brake comes up very high before it engages.
Thanks,
Peter
