What does your fluid look like, jim? Black & smelly is not good. But whatever the answer, several fluid changes would be the first thing to try.
I very much agree with Senor Don. If you have no drive, or maybe only drive in reverse, the box is probably nuked. But yours still moves the car, and the fault-diagnosis charts on Townsend Imports' site, plus the separate one on band adjustment, explain that there is plenty you can do without removing the transmission.
If you do have to replace it, I agree with davidk that buying a rebuild from Eriksson Industries is probably a better route than having it rebuilt locally, and the cost is likely to be the same - plus you may lose the use of your car for less time.
