A half gallon (2 quarts) is a lot of coolant to lose, but I suppose that it depends on how frequently you change your oil! I typically need to add a cup or so of coolant everry few months. If the "heater hose" that blew is the one that comes out of the head and makes an immediate 90-degree turn, that is a frequent failure item; the overflow tank hose is not though, so it raises some questions.
Have you inspected every single hose junction for leaks? Rubber compresses over time, the hose clamps then become a bit loose. While you're at it, you might want to tighten all of the clamps that you come across just for good measure. What about the front of the water pump, which is hard to see because of the pulley? Any signs of leaking there?
The cheap and low tech way to check for a head gasket leak is to rub your finger on the inside of the exhaust pipe when it is cool. If there is coolant in there, it will be slimy and have a distinct odor. If that's the case, your HG is shot. Any bubbling in the overflow tank is also a sure sign of HG failure. A more positive test is something like the Lisle 75500 Combustion Leak Detector Kit, available from places like NAPA or on Ebay. This uses a chemical to test the coolant for combustion products.
