I agree about a DIY going out the top. Unless you can get the car high enough, taking it out the bottom sounds more difficult because I would think it's easier to lift a few hundred pound engine/trans than a 3000 pound car in the air without a hydraulic car lift.
try a search on techniques for taking it out the bottom to see how others have done it.
