If you need to replace the heater core, get a new one - this is too painful of a job to have to repeat. For the number of years that the car will last, the plastic core should be fine, costs about $140 (get the Nissens over the Marelli or Scantech), you don't really need the genuine SAAB metal core for $300+. And for an extra $20, get the entire kit as some of the hoses, connectors or clamps are undoubtedly on borrowed time.
You might also consider replacing the blower motor at the same time, costs less than $60.
