Our 96 and 97 9000's are different animals when it comes to attention required to keep them in good shape. The 96 started as a rental, got it with 10K, and it has required minimum attention so far at 123K. Main thing is exhaust, belts with pulleys, and normal service items, fluids, tires, batteries etc.
The 97 appears to have come out of the box with issues, it was a lease with 22K and signs of uncaring use with unresolved problems, like a sticking brake light switch and details that weren't right. It required a head gasket at <100K, radiator, governor seals, A/C expansion valve, door lock attention, and a power steering pump and transmission spring needing replacement.
Neither car has required brakes except the 97 when I first got it. What you get is a combination of the draw from new and maintenance, care and/or abuse since.
