cam shaft sprocket bolt broke Posted by Viggen Aero [Email] |
97 9000 aero 220K. Car ran fine. Parked car and 4 hours later no start. Cranking over sounded wrong, high pitch noise. I found the bolt holding sprocket to cam shaft broke, so cam ( closest to firewall not spinning. I retrieved broken bolt. Don't think pistons and valves clashed. The head gasket had recently started leaking due to over heating. ( bad fan relay)
What do you think happened to cause this the broken bolt. I can remove cam and replace or remove broken stud and replace.
I'm really bummed because I have owned this car for 8 years and do not want to part with it. It's in good shape mechanically except for head gasket and where the rear driver's side panhard rod connects to rear floor pan channel is rotted out. Car still drives fine. But this would be really expensive to fix the rot.
Could the bad head gasket have caused an internal failure to shear the cam sprocket bolt? So I'm thinking it might be time to RIP.
Ideas?
