You're really asking two questions. Should I buy an automatic? Should I buy this automatic?
Regarding the first question, the late model automatics have a reputation for being much more reliable than the early model automatics. I wouldn't rule out a '97 CS simply because it has an automatic.
The second question only you can answer. Things to look for and consider:
1. Records and receipts for ATF fluid changes. Saab specifies 30,000 mile change intervals, but Quasi and others on this board recommend 15,000.
2. Has the CS been converted to fpt? If not, then the automatic hasn't been exposed to a lot of torque.
3. Pull the ATF dipstick. Is the fluid red and normal smelling, or brown and stinky? Beware if brown and stinky.
4. Does it upshift and downshift smoothly? If it upshifts way too soon, then the governor seals are bad. That is the most frequent problem reported with the late model automatics, and it is a DIY repair.
5. How will you and wife drive the car? The transmission's life will be shortened by full throttle upshifts and full throttle kickdowns. If spirited driving will be the norm, then don't buy this car.
6. How and where did previous owners drive the car? 112000km of highway driving is must easier than the same amount of urban driving. Hot climates are harder on automatics than cool climates.
7. You've already noted that the car is in top order, which is a good sign that this automatic hasn't been abused.
