It's been approximately 10 years since I last posted, but I try to read this board daily. Many thanks to all for their contributions over the years and to Scott and sponsors.

My '98 had the same 2nd gear synchro problem, started at 65k miles and at 102k I bought a rebuilt from Erikson; paid $1,700 two years ago.

The transmission never seemed 'right' from the first drive off the dealer lot in Nov '97; when I brought it back to the bumbling service manager, he said no problemo found. On a side note, I'm convinced the arrogant incompetence of many of Saab's dealer network personnel contributed to the brand's demise. Good riddance to those who now must find another venue to screw loyal customers.

The one I received from Erickson has a high pitched whine in 5th gear at 50-60 mph, otherwise it shifts as smoothly as one can expect from a Saab tranny. If you search the board you'll find Erikson replaces only components they deem below spec and they do NOT do a complete teardown, rebuild. When I called to compalin about the whine, they seemed very customer oriented, but their 1 year warranty is inadequate for the cost.

It was installed by the great Tom Townsend, a 400 mile round trip worth every minute. He also installed a new clutch, slave cylinder and rear engine seal for a total of $1,200. Tom strongly recommends Amsoil 20/50 Series 2000, replaced yearly. Erikson had a different recommendation for gear lube, 10/30 if I remember correctly. I live in the SE, so Townsend's recommendation might be different for another region.

In summary, for $3,000 I've received another two years of grins and expect/hope this 9k will continue as my daily driver for another three years.
