I use Mobil I 0w-40 in most of my cars, and I believe it is made in the US.
The 0W only effects the cold weight, and my guess is that a 0W cold is a lot thicker than a 40W hot.
The only problem I've had is that on my '97 Mercedes, which sometimes sits for a couple of weeks, the 0W-40 drained out of the lifters and I got a clatter on startup. Since the Mercedes uses 7 quarts of oil, I now use 5 quarts of 0W-40 and 2 quarts of 15W-50, both Mobil I.
