...and tried every scenario possible to get as close to on the marks as possible after several rotations.
Actually, it just occurred to me that the chain tensioner was probably extended beyond 11mm (decided not to measure due to project budgetary constraints...), could that cause enough of an issue to explain some of what I'm experiencing?
I had basically planned to get the car running again and drive around hoping it wouldn't immediately start falling apart... since it's proving that it doesn't want to fall apart right away, I guess it deserves a new timing chain, and might as well do the valve stem steals while I'm back in there, which I neglected during the HG job - I get a puff of blue smoke on warm start (i.e. engine off for 5-10 minutes) and a puff when I'm off the throttle on vacuum going down a hill, then go back on the throttle. Not to mention the clutch is feeling pretty raunchy... really abrupt and switchlike...
