The push button on the door frame only controls the interior courtesy lights.
There is a magnet in the door latch arm and a magnetic switch attached to the door latch mechanism frame. When the door is closed the arm is away from the switch, and the switch in the latch is open (breaks the circuit). When the door is opened, the arm moves close to the switch. Te switch closes, which lights the pictogram in the dash. When you are troubleshooting start with the two pin connector underneath the door interior panel that connects to wires that go up to the switch. If that is disconnected then the door ajar light will not come on. If the connector looks good, disconnect the switch and short the two pins in the door. The light should go on in the pictogram. If the light doesn't go on, then a wire is broken or the bulb is burned out. If the light does go on for the test, then the switch up in latch is bad.
If the switch is bad, you button up the door and forget about it. Taking the door latch out is a frustrating an unrewarding activity. The magnetic switch is listed as replaceable part, as is the magnet, so theoretically you could order the parts to repair the problem. A junker might be a better prospect.
