Both the 96 and 97 original belts ran rough, jiggled the tensioner pulley a lot, and had many cracks across the inside well before the recommended 60K change interval. One tensioner and belt failed at 50K. Apparently the tensioner was worn out due to all the jiggling. The tensioner failed by momentarily sticking causing the belt to slip to destruction. If your tensioner pulley is jiggling about and the tensioner randomly making a knocking noise, its best to do something about it right away. The latest Contitech belts from Eeuro run very smoothly with very little movement of the tensioner pulley. A rough running belt certainly could lead to fatigue cracking of the bracket.
