adamK, I don't know your exact problem but my 96 CS FPT needs a new coupler, the area around the tapered pin is really wallowed out, couldn't get the tranny in reverse plus there was lot of slop; problem is, I broke off the tapered pin while trying to take it out and now I cannot remove it, as is. So after !$%^#*ing profusely for quite a while, calmer nerves prevailed. I decided to try a temporary fix/combat repair as it's called in the military.
I loosened the coupler at the shifter and aligned both the tranny & the shifter (in 4th gear). Once aligned, I tightened the coupler at the shifter, at the other end I placed a small metal hose clamp over the area of the broken tapered pin & really tightened down the bolt on the hose clamp; result, for the past 2 weeks my tranny hasn,t been this slop free in years and "hello reverse, good to have you again".
Don't know how long it will last, but I will not replace the coupler until there is a need for the tranny to be removed from the car. If you should try this I found it easier to remove the battery box out of the way.
Good Luck.
