Wonderful that being helpful is possible - thanks for the thanks !
May I ask what part of the country you are in ?
(As you may have guessed, I am in Vermont - so road salt can be a problem.)
I priced out vac pumps of the sort you had, and ended up getting a BIG compressor, some cheap air tools - and a venturi vac pump.
Holy cow am I glad I did !!!
Way back when I used to do HVAC w/ R-12, 22 & 502 we had a couple of the 'regular sort' and they are slow, slow, slow - BUT, the venturi type is amazingly fast - cheap, and draws down very deep, which all surprised me for how cheap it was.
Anyhow - all the stuff I bought together still cost less than just 1(!) 'normal' vac pump, and I will never have to buy vac pump oil either, which is a huge bonus IMO.
Speaking also of oil since you mentioned it - use care not to load too much of it into the system - if it's been filled and not obviously leaked out then you may do best not to add more.
(Also - replacing the rec/drier on a leaky R-134a system is a feel-good job ONLY if you don't bust any line ends, otherwise I recommend leaving it alone rather than using extra time and money that would be better spent on the cans of gas you'll need for this adventure.)
Sorry if all that is too controversial.
The ideas you'll hear quite often about working on a/c will drive you nuts; so I would suggest that if you would like some info 1st hand from a less worrisome POV, feel free to email me a phone #, time in the evening that is your 'latest' and/or if weekend calling is OK, and I will ring you to go over this stuff and try to help you - minus typing and delays.
Book learning is good - but again - too much effort for little gain in this situation IMO as someone who has worked on this stuff puh-fesh-uh-nolly.
And no - cans of refrigerant DO NOT expire - UNLESS they leak !!!
Best Wishes,
mark
