because they have the OBD-II system; just plug in a generic code reader to retrieve codes.
It sounds like you now have the drivetrain and electronics from a 1995 in a 1996 body - so your engine and engine management will be pure 1995 (without OBD-II). The first thing that I would do is try to retrieve error codes using the "flash code" mechanism: you turn the ignition key to the "ON" position without starting the car, read the number of flashes on the "CHECK ENGINE" light and check to see what they mean. Here is a list that I found using the search function (not sure if it is model-year specific):
Fault codes (number of flashes):
2 Manifold absolute pressure sensor
3 Intake air temperature sensor
4 Coolant temperature sensor
5 Throttle position sensor
6 Oxygen sensor
7 Fuel-air mixture
8 EVAP valve (ELCD)
My guess is that you will see eight flashes, which will help diagnose the gas tank problem.
