The difference being that your '91 temperature gauge was reading directly from the temperature sensor; the '96 controls the temperature gauge via the EDU, and is not subject to fluctuations seen on earlier 9000s (I believe the change in temp. gauge control occurred in '93). Your readings are really spot-on, both for the needle position and coolant temp.
