Frustrations removing rusted torx bolt (long)

My wife's 98 CSE has been having occasional warm start problems where it will crank but not start. Usually if you stop cranking and turn the key again it will start right up on the 2nd or 3rd attempt. Anyway, I figured this could be a Crankshaft Position Sensor issue so, thinking that it was a pretty trivial job to replace it, I thought I might as well do that (since this is a 98, the CPS is by the flywheel at the front of the engine, not behind the crankshaft pulley as on the earlier models.
Well the CPS is held in place by one torx bolt. But since it is close to the bottom of the engine compartment it is totally rusted up. The torx bit just slips in the splines (I am sure I was using the right size - T30) and now they are totally stripped out. There's not a lot of room down there so I was wondering if anybody had any good ideas for getting it out?
I had a half-hearted attempt welding on a hex bolt to the torx bolt head with my MIG welder, but I am nowhere near skilled enough to do this in such a confined space. I also cut a slot in the head and tried getting a regular screwdriver, held by vise grips, in there, but not surprisingly this did not produce enough torque.
My next option might be to use a close quarters drill with a left handed drill bit and try and drill it out. Any thoughts on this approach? Alternatively if I could cut the tab between the bolt and the CPS I could remove the CPS and this would give me room to get in to the bolt head with vise grips, I think - but at that point the car will definitely be inoperable!
