Fuel pump life is directly proportional to the amount of fuel tank grit that it circulates through itself.
I've damaged 2! c900 pumps by being stupid enough to fill my fuel tank at less than new gas stations. Sure, our tanks are Poly (unlike VW ones which rusted internally.. killing their pumps like flies) But.. fuel pumped from aged underground, rusted, leaky storage tanks can and does fill Automobile fuel tanks with serious amounts of grit. With such stuff in the tank, habitually running a low fuel level, the grit gets recirculated far more often than it would be if it were a full tank.
Incremental damage inevitably results, it certainly did for me.. twice.
Personally I prefer the small extra weight over the rear axle.. it helps handling.
