I can see one big advantage to using bolts. If you have to pull the head off to replace the head gasket, you won't have those pesky studs in the way. Unbolt the exhaust manifold at the head and pick it up. No more messing around with the turbo flange and all that other stuff. It shouldn't be that hard to get the bolts to stay put. How about red loktite? The bolt should be less prone to breakage, also. Two of my studs broke off without much force at all. Burt has a good idea with the internal star lock washers, too. I agree that your indy should've done something different to keep them in place.
