The 9000 was originally designed with a hinged subframe to allow for (relatively) easy transmission work from under the car. You can lower the left side of the subframe for easy access to the transmission for clutch changes, etc. I know that was on early cars, not 100% sure that lasted trough the run or not.
I'm doubtful you could get the trans out the top. The motor, probably, but not the trans, at least not with the engine still in place.
And since you're supposed to support the motor with one of those bridges that span the engine bay...
