Alternator wiring

I recently purchased a well-maintained 1991 9kt with just over 100K and all service records. I need the help of the BB to understand why the prior owner/tech added some unusual wiring to the car.
While preparing to change a power steering hose, I noticed a large, red (hot) wire that ran directly from the + terminal of the batterey to the alternator. (The wiring clearly isn't factory.) Also, the wire connected no devices between the battery and the alternator. The factory wiring harness is in tact with no evidence of splicing or prior repair work.
The car has sat since May and the battery doesn't hold a charge. It has been weak since I purchased the car, and since the battery appears old, I assumed it was at fault. The car turns over just fine when the battery is freshly charged.
Was the wire added to correct a problem with the solenoid or the ignition switch? I initially thought it was for a car stereo since the car did seem to have an amplifier mounted in the back. However, the wire in question ran directly from the battery to the alternator with nothing connected in-between.
Anyway, I am curious about this practice in order to understand what the past owner/tech had in mind.
Thanks,
Dan
