There is no easy way to get to the rod connection.
The approach has to be from underneath the car. I used ramps. Wear eye protection or at least eyeglasses. Crawl underneath on your back with your legs dangling out the front of the car.
I don't know the size of the retainer C-clip. I know the wastegate circlip is part number 55558372, is sometimes called a lock ring, and cost $12.60 at eEuro the last time I checked (May 2009).
I was convinced that even if I had a clip it would be a major pain to install. Fortunately my wastegate lever had a hole in it for installing a cotter pin. A cotter pin was used before they switched to the clip.
I put a small finishing nail through the hole and bent the nail so it won't fall out. No problems with this solution for over a year. If you're in the rust zone, then you want something stainless. Try a marine store if your local hardware or building supply doesn't have a stainless part.
Other things people have used in lieu of the clip:
paperclip
cotter pin (stainless if in rust zone)
key ring
1/4" zinc-coated push nut - the sort of thing that holds the wheels in a child's wagon or tricycle.
