I just changed the water pump on my 1998 CSE. Wondering if anyone else has had same experience. The instructions in manuals and various posts on this site make the job simplier than my reality. I found I had to:
(1) remover serp belt (expected)
(2) remove water pump pulley with pump in car (expected)
(3) remove A/C compressor (expected), but to do so:
(3a) remove turbo/intercooler air hose to gain access to lower oil cooler mounting screws (two 7mm screws)
(3b) dismount oil cooler to gain clearance between A/C bracket and oil cooler so compressor can be removed.
(4) remove A/C bracket (expected)
(5) remove turbo coolant line at water pump (expected)
(6) remove three water pump bolts (expected)
(7) remove hoses at pump (expected)
(8) remove pump, but to get clearance to do so (sliding pump off the block tube):
(8a) remove O2 sensor
(8b) drop exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold -- this also required removing the 16mm bolt at the top of the muffler.
While in there I changed the hoses and serp belt. Since I had a new radiator to engine hose available (the one to the thermostat), I replaced that too. Next day the plastic pipe where this connects to the radiator disintegrated. Lost all coolant and needed a tow home. Fortunately the radiator replaced looks like true "cake".
