Might be the culprit. Take it out and test it (Or if you have a tech2 gizmo look to see if it's failed ?). Only thing that I can think of that would not allow any return air into your gas tank. One would think that a damaged hose would let air in? Certainly retrieving the setup from the wrecked car might be clever.
One can buy decent quality (better than oem actually :-) gas caps with a one way vent valve for $10 at most auutoparts stores. As an alternate to a loose cap, if your cap is one of the later non vented variety.
