saab indie preferably. Removing the timing cover is not something you wanna try as a First serious DIY. In the putting it together stages on son's car This has been THE worst mech Job I've ever done on a Saab.. hands down. Damn near everything must come off. Pulling the motor wqould be a half hours more work. Although his is a 2 litre and yours is not.
There is also NO need to reverse thread the replacement. IF.. you choose to renew the thread DO insist on a Wurth (or similar)Threadsert, IMO Helicoils have proven to be Crappy. Even the oem Saab one in the Oil sump drain plug has unscrewed itself.
Although not entirely sure that your wrecked bit is not a bolt onto the timing cover casting.. make sure it is.
