Does a used DI cassette (in the trunk 4 yrs) ever fail? Posted by John Fitzgerald [Email] [Profile/Gallery]

Driving last week, had classic DI symptoms - hesitation, stumbling in a couple of gears, poor boost performance, then - silence, a battery light glowing on the dash as the engine quit.
We coasted to a stop, opened the trunk, and installed the used (old) red cassette. The engine cranked like a bandit, seemed to try to fire a few times, but wouldn't start. Towed the car home, ordered a crank position sensor from eEuroparts and waited.
Installed the CPS today. Â No start, cranks and cranks. Â Didn't have any moaning from fuel pump (it's original with 199k mi) ... so before I order either $420 DI or ???, curious if the years of bouncing around in the trunk have ever ruined a previously used DI. Â It was certainly old when I replaced it, the 'spark plug burn-off' function had ceased, which is one of my warning signs to prepare for a replacement DI.
Any thoughts?
