AMM is easy to find. Follow the big rubber hose from the intake manifold, and you'll come to the AMM. It will have an electrical connector, easily detached by pushing on the stiff wire "bail", then pulling the connector to the AMM ("bail" is my creation - if anyone knows the name for the wire thingamajingies you push to do this type of disconnect, please let us know).
I don't think the AMM is the problem, but try it anyway. An AMM problem would likely cause really crappy running under any circumstances, which you say doesn't happen.
As for pulling the pump fuse to get it to start, this indicates that mixture was to rich to allow starting, and stopping the pump leans it. Why was the mixture rich? Perhaps the accelerator was depressed too soon after cranking as the engine attempted to start. Depressing the pedal doesn't just rotate the butterfly "to give it more air", it also - via the throttle position sensor - tells the ECU that you are demanding power, which means "give me more fuel", not just more air. Just talking off the top of my head - don't really know the cause of your problem. Clogged air cleaner perhaps? Anyway, good luck!
