I had the same problem with my '98 at around the same mileage. There were no other signs of low coolant temperatures. There is a separate sensor just for the gauge (via the computer) on the diver's side of the engine. In my case the wire to it must of had a break just inside the sensor because if I wiggled the wire a bit and pushed it into the sensor the gauge would work for a day or two. I think vibration and engine torque causes metal fatigue in the wire. I ended up replacing the sensor. It is easy to get at and one can swap in a new one with only a few drops of coolant loss. Put a dab of pipe joint compound on the threads of the new one.
