bypassing heater core question(s)

Hello All,
And thanks in advance for any responses/help.
I have a rather serious coolant leak. From position of ground drip (flow?) from the bottom of the aquarium, I'm pretty sure it the heater core. As a temporary fix I understand the input and output lines from the heater can be cut and joined together to effectively bypass the heater core.
2 questions:
1. Anybody have suggestions for procedure-quick, easy and cheap (would like all three).
2. Anybody know the inside I.D. of the two hoses (appear to be same size) so I can buy the right fittings before I cut the hoses?
Thanks again.
Rick
